Theoretically anything goes good with anything. My BF is playing a R/Mo and loving it. He's plowing through Charr and other things like they're nothing using parties of 4 when he could in using groups of 6. I have the reverse of what you're thinking and enjoying it tremendously. My set up is great for magic using creatures.

My main is a ranger/mesmer, and I focus on bow skills and conjure phantasm-a few points and NOTHING stands in my way. I often straight solo (no henches, nothing) for the fun of it.

Im a ranger monk, level 16 myself.

I like this, because I am able to damage deal if I wish, by using mostly ranger skills, or, thanks to the ability to re-arrange attributes, I can put skills into healing and become a healer if the group needs one.

Additionally, in later quests you can use the monk smiting skills in missions vs undead.

Further, I plan on using ONLY ranger skills in PvP, and as most people frown upon this, I have found my particular build to work very well - thus, it doesnt matter what my secondary is unless Im in PvE, and again, in PvE choosing monk as your secondary gives ya the option to damage deal or heal!

GL with your decision!

i'm a Ranger/mesmer myself and it's not to bad. i was having trouble figuring out how to work the mesmer dkills into my fighting style but when i did, my character turned out to be pretty powerful. i'm enjoying it, but it's up to you.

I am a Ranger/Monk12 currently and really enjoying the combination (PvE only at this point).

I use mostly Ranger skills in combat, but keep Resurrection and Healing on the skillbar for party support. Since I'm usually in the back, I find that I'm one of the last people to get attacked and have opportunities to heal my frontline teamates should the battle turn against us. If things really hit the fan, I find Dodge pretty useful -- then come back and Res. the remainder of the party.

With good preparations and some points in Expertise (to reduce energy usage), I find that I'm able to deal pretty substantial damage from relative safety. Throw in Hunter's Shot for those moving opponents...

ranger mesmer is HUGE fun, and as others have already said about it i wont go into details. I would just recommend searching out the quests for all the secondary profession and find one that you have fun playing, then take that one

Pets: no one really knows right now which is strongest (seems to be most people think its the bear however) but my Strider has done well and a lot of people have the Stalkers that you have to tame for the ranger quest so just pick one you like the look of and if it doesn't work out, you can give it to teh tamer (he's stood near Nente; the guy that gives you charm animal in pre-sear) and you can go tame another pet.

I just got Guild Wars last Friday. My main and only character is a Level 8 Ranger/Mesmer (pre-Searing). I wanted the Ranger from the outset because of the bow attacks but I chose the Mesmer because it seems to put enemies at an even further disposition if you can confuse/affect them at range. And with a pet, it's even better. I've stuck with my Melandru's Stalker (though I thought I'd lost him....accidentally took off the charm skill) as a pet and he kicks major ass. The useful bastard is Level 8 as well.

Anyway, definitely recommend the combo.

Loving my Ranger/Elementalist. I can't imagine being without Fire Rain now.
I did the Ranger/Monk thing in betas, but didn't find much use for the monk skills in my playtime.

Ditto the R/E. I am post searing with my dude and fire rain/flare rock. Flare is there for when I am waiting for my dual shot to recharge. Fire rain works well for when you have a *cough* bait *cough* henchie magic user along. Charr love magic users . As a ranger, it is just nice to have an area attack spell.

Due to the extremely large number of skills you get for completing both sets of skill quests, it is hard to find a good balance between elementalist and ranger without some fiddling around. Not all mixes are good for your play style so adjust your build as necessary.

I'm currently a 20 Ranger/Elementalist that specializes in fire and I am loving it, because I am mostly in the back and the spells that Elementalist gives adds to how much damage(AOE and direct)I can do on top of the skills from Ranger.
